Trump and Sheinbaum: Agreement on Stopping Immigration and Strengthening Cooperation to Combat Drugs
U.S. President-elect Donald Trump reported on Wednesday that Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has agreed to take measures to stop immigration across the southern border of the United States.
In a post on his platform, Truth Social, Trump wrote: "Mexico will prevent people from heading to our southern border, starting now. This will go a long way toward ending the illegal invasion of the United States. Thank you."
Trump indicated that he had a "productive" phone call with Sheinbaum, where she confirmed her commitment to "halt immigration across Mexico towards the United States" and effectively close the southern border, as he described it.
During the call, the President-elect also discussed "possible ways to stop the large influx of drugs into the United States, along with the consumption of these drugs by Americans." Trump expressed his satisfaction with the call, emphasizing its significance.
Furthermore, Trump promised to launch a "wide-ranging" advertising campaign in America to educate citizens about the dangers of fentanyl, stating: "Millions of lives are being ruined for no reason. By the time the campaign ends, everyone will be aware of the horror that this drug represents."
For her part, Sheinbaum expressed her appreciation for her conversation with Trump on her account on the platform X, saying, "We had an excellent conversation." She emphasized that Mexico is adopting a strategy to deter immigration, asserting the need for caravans not to remain at the northern border, as they are present in Mexico.
The Mexican president also praised the revival of security cooperation between the two countries and reiterated the campaigns being implemented in Mexico to prevent fentanyl consumption.
It is worth noting that immigration was one of the key issues in Trump’s election campaign, where he pledged to impose strict restrictions and to deport undocumented immigrants en masse, a measure that has not been seen in the United States for decades.
