Success of Emirati mediation in prisoner exchange reveals growing role of Arab diplomacy in resolving the Russian-Ukrainian crisis
Moscow and Kyiv managed to carry out a military prisoner exchange operation today, Wednesday, through successful Emirati mediation.
The Russian Defense Ministry posted details of the operation on Telegram saying: "As a result of the negotiation process, 25 Russian soldiers were returned from territories under the control of the Kyiv regime. In exchange, 25 Ukrainian soldiers were handed over."
The ministry explained that the Russian soldiers were transferred to Belarus to receive medical and psychological assistance before their final return to their country.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced the return of 25 soldiers to Ukraine, indicating that fighters from the Azovstal plant in Mariupol were among them.
Zelenskyy emphasized in a tweet on X platform saying: "Bringing our people home is what Ukraine works on continuously, and we won't stop until we bring all our people back."
Zelenskyy shared photos of the returning soldiers, showing some during medical examination and others carrying the Ukrainian flag.
Both Russian and Ukrainian sides confirmed the pivotal role of the United Arab Emirates in the successful mediation.
