Suwayda Protesters Continue Their Peaceful Movement for the 359th Consecutive Day

Protesters in Suwayda province in southern Syria took to the streets today, Friday, August 9, in a new demonstration, reaffirming their commitment to their peaceful movement for the 359th consecutive day.

The local network “Suwayda 24” reported that crowds of protesters gathered from various villages and areas of the province to participate in the central demonstration in Al-Karama Square, demanding the overthrow of the regime. The demonstration included speeches, chanting of popular songs, and the honoring of engineer Mursal Al-Barouki by the professional assembly in Al-Karama Square, who had previously refused government recognition due to his opposition to the regime.

The banners displayed by “Suwayda 24” included images and slogans emphasizing the protesters' continued revolution, with calls for freedom, the overthrow of the regime, and the implementation of UN Resolution 2254.

Meanwhile, the "Suwayda Media Center" reported that the protesters in Al-Karama Square welcomed a delegation from the village of Mafaalah with chants affirming unity, a unity that the Syrian regime and Iran are trying to undermine. The center added that the residents came out today despite the psychological warfare being waged by the Syrian regime and Iran to create chaos in the province and provoke internal conflict, aiming to divert the residents' attention from the main instigator.

The village of Mafaalah in northeastern Suwayda experienced tension on August 7th, when protesters were prevented from entering the village and gunfire was directed into the air by a regime-affiliated armed group. According to the local network “Suwayda 24,” military intelligence supported a man named Salim Hamid in forming a new armed faction.

Today’s central demonstration comes a week before the first anniversary of the start of the peaceful movement in Suwayda, which began on August 17, 2023, calling for freedom and the overthrow of the regime, amidst repeated attempts by the regime to suppress this movement. On July 15, a group of protesters in Suwayda was fired upon by regime forces fortified in the Baath Party branch headquarters in the city after the protesters attempted to re-close the building, resulting in a civilian being injured during a demonstration near the same building.

Jouad Al-Barouki also died from wounds he sustained from regime gunfire in Suwayda while participating in a demonstration near the "Reconciliation Center" in the city center on February 28, becoming the first protester in Suwayda to be killed by regime forces.
