Report: Explosion-damaged Crimea bridge to be repaired by July 2023
Repairs to the bridge between the annexed Crimean peninsula and southern Russia, which was damaged in an explosion last Saturday, are to be finished by July 2023, a document published on the Russian government’s website said.
The Crimea bridge, a showcase project of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s rule, was damaged in a blast that Russia has blamed on Ukraine. Some Ukrainian officials celebrated the incident but Kyiv has not claimed responsibility.
Early Saturday morning (Oct 8), the Kerch bridge connecting Crimea to Russia caught fire. The cause of the fire at the Kerch bridge is unknown.
A huge explosion was heard before the massive fire broke out, according to eye-witnesses and video footages.
The explosion on the twelve-mile-long bridge destroyed one section of the road bridge, temporarily halting road traffic. It also destroyed several fuel tankers on a train heading towards the annexed peninsula from neighboring southern Russia.
