Remlin Reveals Details on Granting Asylum to Bashar alAssad

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated on Monday that Russian President Vladimir Putin was the one who decided to grant asylum to the ousted Syrian regime leader, Bashar al-Assad. He confirmed that there are currently no scheduled meetings between Putin and Assad.

Peskov clarified regarding the future of the two Russian military bases in Syria that it is too early to discuss this matter, indicating that it is being negotiated with the parties that will take over authority later. He noted that the next phase will be challenging in Syria due to the state of instability, which requires continued dialogue with all regional powers.

In a related context, the Kremlin officially announced on Sunday the presence of Assad in the Russian capital, Moscow. Russian news agencies reported that Assad and his family are residing in Moscow following the collapse of his regime due to an attack by armed opposition factions.

Peskov added that Russia's decision to grant asylum to Assad and his family was based on "humanitarian considerations." According to the Kremlin, the Syrian opposition factions that took control of Damascus ensured the security of the Russian military bases.

These developments come after the Syrian armed opposition announced the ousting of Assad following its control of Damascus on Sunday, marking the end of his family’s rule that lasted more than 13 years amid a protracted civil war.
