Strasbourg, France experienced an unprecedented tram collision resulting in at least twenty people injured, marking the first major incident since the network's relaunch three decades ago.

An official spokesperson for the prefecture reported an initial assessment indicating twenty individuals in "relative emergency status", adding that the accident's circumstances remain under investigation.

Authorities imposed a strict security cordon around the accident site, with ambulances densely positioned near the tram station, as confirmed by a France Press Agency correspondent on location.

Footage shared by eyewitnesses on social media platforms revealed extensive damage to both trams inside the tunnel near the station, with one tram appearing derailed due to the collision's force.

This incident represents the first major accident in Strasbourg, a city that was the first major French city to relaunch its tram network in 1994, maintaining an accident-free safety record for thirty years.
