On the First Anniversary of October 7th.. Halevi: We've Dealt Strong Blows to Hamas

Halevi's reference to a "long war" sheds light on the complexities of the security situation in the region and raises questions about the possibilities of de-escalation in the near future
Israeli Chief of Staff, Herzi Halevi, made statements on Sunday claiming that Israeli forces have made significant progress against Hamas's military wing. These statements came during a speech he delivered to soldiers on the first anniversary of the October 7th attack carried out by the movement.
Halevi said: "A year has passed, and we have dealt strong blows to Hamas's military wing, as well as a severe blow to Hezbollah, which has suffered losses in its top leadership. We will not stop," as reported by Agence France-Presse.
Halevi emphasized that Israel is engaged in a long-term war, pledging to continue military operations against those he described as attackers. He added: "It's a long war, measured not only by capabilities but also by the strength of will and perseverance over time."
In a related context, the Israeli army announced earlier today the deployment of more forces around the Gaza Strip, on the eve of the first anniversary of the October 7th attack.
A military statement said that "the Gaza Division has been reinforced with several battalions, with forces positioned to defend both the towns and the border area," adding that "the soldiers are fully equipped to defend the area in coordination with local security forces."
The statement indicated the presence of three divisions inside Gaza working on what it described as "dismantling the terrorist infrastructure and weakening Hamas's capabilities." It also quoted the Southern Command chief, Yaron Finkelman, confirming that "the Southern Command remains in a state of high alert and readiness for the coming days."
It's worth noting that Hamas carried out an attack on October 7, 2023, which resulted in the death of 1,205 people, according to a count by AFP based on official Israeli figures. Since then, Israel has been conducting a military campaign in the Gaza Strip, which has resulted in the death of 41,825 Palestinians, according to the latest statistics issued by the Ministry of Health in Gaza.
