New Israeli Strike: Elimination of Hezbollah's Intelligence Chief in Syria
-
The timing of announcing Shaheen's elimination reflects an Israeli desire to demonstrate its ability to target party leaders in various areas of its influence
The Israeli army noted its success in eliminating Mahmoud Mohammad Shaheen, Hezbollah's intelligence officer in Syria, along with two of his assistants about a month ago.
An Israeli military statement revealed that Shaheen was killed along with Hashem Safi Al-Din and Intelligence Division Commander Hussein Ali Hazima, coinciding with airstrikes targeting the party's intelligence facilities in Syria.
The statement revealed that Shaheen had held the position of Intelligence Division Officer in Syria since 2007, after progressing through a series of positions within the party and intelligence apparatus.
The military source highlighted Shaheen's role in weaving close relationships with the Iranian axis and his supervision of developing intelligence capabilities and air defense in cooperation with parties of this axis.
The statement emphasized Shaheen's importance in coordination between Hezbollah and the Iranian axis, considering his elimination a painful blow to the party's intelligence capabilities.
The Israeli army confirmed inflicting significant damage to Hezbollah's intelligence system through destroying its headquarters in Lebanon, undermining its information gathering capabilities, in addition to targeting its interests in Syria.
