Syrian Military Intelligence Arrests Young Man Attempting to Escape Israeli Escalation
In a new development reflecting the complexity of humanitarian conditions in conflict zones, Syrian military intelligence arrested young Shadi Mohammed Al-Shartah (34 years old) at the Al-Dabousiya border crossing while he was trying to flee from the Israeli escalation in Lebanon.
Al-Shartah, who hails from the town of Al-Bara in the Idlib countryside, was seeking to escape the deteriorating conditions in the region.
According to the Syrian Network for Human Rights, the Assad regime has not informed the young man's family of his whereabouts since his arrest. Reports indicate that his mobile phone was confiscated, preventing him from communicating with his family or informing them of his fate.
This incident comes at a time when Lebanon is witnessing a severe military escalation from Israel, which has resulted in military operations and pressures that have caused a wave of displacement, prompting many Syrians to seek a safe haven. However, the tragedies of displacement do not stop at the borders, as many of those fleeing face an uncertain fate amid the repressive measures taken by the Syrian regime against refugees and migrants.
This incident highlights the significant challenges that Syrians face in their attempts to escape conflict and persecution, as safe routes out of danger zones become increasingly complicated. It also underscores the difficult conditions suffered by Syrians in neighboring countries, where risks are mounting on a daily basis.
The network expressed its fears that he might be subjected to torture and could become one of the forcibly disappeared persons, like 85% of all detainees. They called for clarification on the fate of thousands of those who have been forcibly disappeared by the Syrian regime's forces, voicing real concern for their safety.
