Mbappe faces rape allegations in Sweden
The Swedish prosecution has confirmed that an investigation has been opened on charges of "rape" without naming the suspects, following media scrutiny directed at French national football team captain Kylian Mbappe, who was visiting Stockholm. The Real Madrid player denied the allegations, describing the rumors as "false news."
The prosecution stated: "In light of media reports regarding a suspected case of rape in Stockholm, the prosecutor can confirm that a rape complaint has been filed with the police." They added that the alleged incident took place at a hotel in the Swedish capital on October 10.
After the Swedish newspaper "Aftonbladet" reported that the police were informed of an alleged rape without mentioning the name of the accused, the newspaper "Expressen" later stated that Mbappe is the suspect.
According to Expressen, "Based on information obtained by Expressen, the police are investigating the star, who is suspected based on reasonable grounds of having committed rape and sexual assault." Swedish law enforcement distinguishes between levels of suspicion, categorizing them as either reasonable or probable, with reasonable being the lowest level of suspicion.
When contacted by Agence France-Presse, those close to the 25-year-old player stated that they were not aware of any legal complaint made against him.
Mbappe was not selected for France's two matches in the UEFA Nations League, and he visited the Swedish capital with a group of friends on Thursday, dining at a restaurant in the city center, according to Aftonbladet, before leaving Sweden with his friends on Friday.
The newspaper reported that the crime of rape occurred "in downtown Stockholm," citing a formal complaint filed with the police on Saturday, which they had access to. It stated that the complaint was made after the alleged victim sought medical attention but did not mention anyone's name in the accusation.
Later, Expressen reported that Mbappe is the suspect.
The French star commented on the widely circulated news on Monday, writing on his official account on "X": "False news."
