  • Israeli Official: Turkey Establishing Military Base in Palmyra is a "Red Line"

  • Continued Israeli military operations in southern Syria come within a broader strategy to contain Turkish influence, especially after Ankara strengthened its presence in Palmyra

A senior Israeli official stated on Thursday that any move inside Syria that might threaten Israel's security would put Syrian President Ahmed Al-Sharaa's government at risk.

According to Israel Hayom newspaper, the official explained that dealing with any threat coming from Syria is a direct responsibility that falls on Damascus, in a clear reference to the necessity of taking measures to prevent any hostile movements.

These statements coincided with the Israeli army's escalation of military activity in southern Syria, where incursions continue in the Quneitra areas and western rural Daraa, amid Tel Aviv's growing concerns about the increasing Turkish presence in the country.

According to the Hebrew newspaper, transitional Syrian President Ahmed Al-Sharaa is seeking to restructure the Syrian army with full Turkish support, which has granted Ankara several privileges, including establishing new military bases, particularly in the city of Palmyra.

In a related context, an Israeli official emphasized that establishing a Turkish military base in Palmyra represents a "red line" for Israel, confirming that recent airstrikes targeted the infrastructure of this base in an attempt to obstruct the Turkish plan.

Hebrew media reports revealed that a meeting was held in Azerbaijan, including officers from Israel and Turkey, discussing the possibility of de-escalation in Syria and seeking understandings to ensure that direct confrontation between the two parties does not occur, similar to the previous understanding between Moscow and Tel Aviv during the rule of deposed President Bashar al-Assad.

Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidam confirmed that his country is conducting technical-level talks with Israel aimed at reducing tension regarding Syria, but denied that there are steps toward normalizing relations between the two sides.
