Israeli Airstrikes on Assad Regime's Weapon Warehouses
Israeli warplanes launched new airstrikes on Monday, targeting weapon storage facilities belonging to Bashar al-Assad's regime, which lost power on Sunday to armed opposition forces supported by Turkey.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights confirmed that the strikes targeted warehouses located in the mountains of the Qalamoun region in rural Damascus, resulting in violent explosions, with no reported casualties.
Since the beginning of this year, the observatory has recorded 169 airstrikes attributed to Israel on Syrian territory, including 143 airstrikes and 26 ground strikes, which resulted in the injury and destruction of approximately 309 targets, varying from weapon and ammunition depots to military headquarters and vehicles. These attacks have led to the deaths of 416 military personnel and injured 286 others, while civilian casualties numbered 66, including 13 children and 16 women, along with a volunteer from the Syrian Red Crescent and 67 wounded individuals.
In a statement to the correspondent of Al-Hurra channel, an Israeli security source revealed that his government is "monitoring the situation in Syria in coordination with the Kurds and the United States," while also seeking to build relationships with the Druze community inside Syria. The source explained that decisions regarding the groups being dealt with are based on intelligence information and prior relations established during the Syrian civil war to identify hostile parties and those that could be cooperated with.
The source also added that the Israeli army is closely monitoring the border areas between Syria and Lebanon, indicating that they are used as alternative crossings for transporting weapons and supplies to Hezbollah. He confirmed that the Israeli army is working to undermine any activity in these areas, targeting the strengthening of Iranian-backed militia capabilities.
The source viewed the stabilization of the situation in Syria as a critical factor in determining Israel's ability to control the borders, emphasizing that Israeli operations aim to protect the country's security and ensure that threats from the Syrian side do not return, while closely monitoring the field and political developments.
He clarified the field details in Syria, noting the presence of pockets of the former regime outside the control of opposition factions, such as the Tartus area where Russian forces are still present. The Israeli army operates along two main axes: a defensive axis that includes strengthening its presence in the Golan Heights, with temporary control over some areas to protect Israeli interests.
Regarding the offensive axis, the source mentioned that the Israeli army has recently conducted dozens of strikes on various areas in Syria, focusing on targeting weapon supply lines and military facilities. He confirmed that operations now include sites belonging to the Syrian army, especially the air force, as Israel seeks to protect its strategic interests without intervening in the internal Syrian conflict.
