Israel Conditions Hamas' Surrender to End the War in Gaza
-
The continuation of Israeli military operations aims to strengthen Tel Aviv's negotiating position, not just achieve field gains

Amid rapid diplomatic efforts to restore the ceasefire agreement in Gaza, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu expressed his government's readiness to discuss the final phase of the war, conditioning it on Hamas' surrender and the departure of its leaders from the Strip. He stated that "military pressure is effective" and that negotiations are taking place "under fire" to maximize gains.
During a government meeting, Netanyahu added: "We continue to crush Hamas' military capabilities and create the optimal conditions for the release of the hostages," emphasizing that Israel will not back down from escalating against the movement.
He also noted that the Israeli army had received orders to intensify military operations, while claiming that his government was making continuous efforts to recover the Israeli hostages.
Regarding mediation efforts, Hamas leader in Gaza, Khalil al-Hayya, announced that the movement had agreed to a new truce proposal received from mediators, accusing Israel of attempting to obstruct diplomatic efforts. Meanwhile, Tel Aviv confirmed that it had sent a "counterproposal" after consulting with Washington, without disclosing its details.
In this context, Egypt proposed a new initiative that includes Hamas releasing five hostages, including an American-Israeli citizen, in exchange for a one-week ceasefire and the entry of humanitarian aid into Gaza, in addition to Israel releasing hundreds of Palestinian prisoners.
It is worth noting that the ceasefire brokered by Egypt, Qatar, and the United States collapsed after 42 days following Tel Aviv’s refusal to implement the second phase of the agreement, leading to an escalation of military operations in the Strip.
