Iranian regime's confusion in denying involvement in Trump assassination plot reveals real fears about president-elect's victory implications for future relations
Tehran fumbled in desperate attempts to deny its involvement in president-elect Donald Trump's assassination plot, after U.S. Department of Justice revealed the arrest of an element linked to Iran's Revolutionary Guard.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi rushed to disavow responsibility via "X" platform Saturday, confusedly denying "U.S. information about Iran's connection to an alleged conspiracy targeting president-elect Donald Trump."
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Ismail Baqai evaded confrontation, claiming in a statement that "allegations about his country's involvement in assassination attempts targeting former or current U.S. officials are a disgusting conspiracy."
Baqai resorted to conspiracy theory, accusing "Zionist and anti-country circles" of fabricating these claims to strain relations with Washington.
The U.S. Department of Justice presented damning evidence Friday proving Afghan citizen Farhad Shakeri's involvement in planning Trump's assassination under direct Revolutionary Guard instructions.
The ministry exposed plot details, confirming that Shakeri (51) "confessed to law enforcement authorities that he was tasked on October 7, 2024, with providing a plan to kill Trump," explaining he currently shelters in Tehran.
The conspiracy revelation coincided with charges against two New York partners, Carlyle Rivera and Jonathan Ludholdt, for complicity in helping Shakeri plan the assassination of an American citizen of Iranian origin.
Trump survived two previous assassination attempts this year, first in July when he suffered a minor ear wound during an election rally in Pennsylvania, and second in September when an armed person was spotted near his golf course in Florida.
