India and Pakistan: Mutual Shelling and Military Incidents at the Border

The India-Pakistan border experienced a new escalation early Wednesday, with the two countries exchanging missile fire. This exchange resulted in the death of 26 people on the Pakistani side, according to Islamabad, while New Delhi confirmed carrying out precise strikes targeting what it described as "terrorist infrastructure" inside Pakistani territory.
In response, the Indian army announced the death of eight civilians in Pakistani shelling, while the Pakistani military vowed a broad retaliatory response to the attacks. Pakistan indicated that it targeted three areas within its territory, including two cities in Kashmir under Islamabad’s control and a city in Punjab province bordering India.
Pakistan’s army spokesperson stated: "All our air force planes are in the air. This is an abhorrent and cowardly attack carried out from within Indian airspace." On his part, Pakistan’s Information Minister, Fawad Chaudhry, condemned the attack, stressing that Pakistan would respond reciprocally—on land and in the skies—and described the Indian assault as "completely unjustified aggression."
As a precaution, Pakistani authorities announced the closure of airspace over major cities such as Lahore and Karachi until 19:20 GMT, including the shutdown of key airports, notably Islamabad International Airport. This significantly affected flight operations. Several Indian airlines canceled their flights to Pakistani-controlled areas, including parts of Kashmir and cities in Rajasthan and Punjab.
Notably, tensions between the two nations escalated considerably after a deadly attack on tourists in Kashmir last April. India accuses Pakistan of supporting cross-border terrorism, which Islamabad vehemently denies, raising the likelihood of further security deterioration in the region.
