Syrian Foreign Minister's Statements Reveal Confusion and Chaos That Dominated Syrian Regime Circles Before Its Fall

Former Syrian regime Foreign Minister Bassam Sabbagh revealed in exclusive interview with Al-Arabiya and Al-Hadath Monday his absence from former regime president Bashar al-Assad's meetings with Russian and Iranian officials.
Sabbagh highlighted his surprise, like other Syrians, at Assad's flight and army's withdrawal from Damascus positions, noting Assad's appeal to Moscow and Tehran for intervention and rescue with recent military operation's launch.
Former Syrian regime Foreign Minister noted: "I presented Assad initiative to launch political process in Syria but he didn't comment.. communications to prevent regime's fall failed and army abandoned positions." Sabbagh emphasized his country will confirm before Security Council necessity of respecting its sovereignty and territorial unity.
Syrian Minister added: "I received no request from any country for Assad's step-down but we were informed of changes and ministry will inform Security Council members through our permanent representative about current situation developments."
Syrian Foreign and Expatriates Ministry issued statement Sunday confirming diplomatic missions' continuation serving Syrian citizens internally and externally.
Statement included: "Today writes new page in Syria's history, inaugurating era and national charter uniting Syrians' word, unifying not dividing them, for building one nation prevailing justice and equality where all enjoy rights and duties, away from single opinion, with citizenship as foundation."
Ministry's announcement came hours after Syrian opposition factions announced "Damascus city liberation and Bashar al-Assad's fall."
