A 500-kilogram World War II bomb was discovered during building work in Berlin on Thursday (August 18), forcing evacuations, the DPA reported, the Anews said.

The bomb in the Friedrichshain district will have to be defused.

A police spokeswoman said: "There could be up to 12,000 people in the area of the exclusion zone, and it will take time."

An emergency shelter has been set up at the Mercedes-Benz Arena, which is normally used for concerts and sports events.

The 500-meter exclusion zone includes the busy Ostkreuz train station in the east of the German capital.

WW2 was a global war that lasted from 1939 to 1945. It involved the vast majority of the world's countries—including all of the great powers—forming two opposing military alliances: the Allies and the Axis powers.

World War II was by far the deadliest conflict in human history; it resulted in 70 to 85 million fatalities, a majority being civilians.

Tens of millions of people died due to genocides (including the Holocaust), starvation, massacres, and disease.
