European Tour.. Zelensky Sees Opportunity to End War by 2025
-
Zelensky's statements about the possibility of ending the war by 2025 indicate cautious optimism, but may be an attempt to motivate Ukraine's allies to provide more military and diplomatic support in
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated on Wednesday that the current circumstances on the battlefield provide an opportunity to take decisive steps towards ending the conflict in Ukraine before 2025.
Zelensky added, during his participation in the Ukraine and Southeast European Countries Summit held in Dubrovnik, Croatia: "During the months of October, November, and December, we have an opportunity to push things towards peace and lasting stability. The situation on the battlefield allows for seizing this opportunity, an opportunity to take decisive action to end the war no later than 2025."
In a related context, Berlin announced that Zelensky will meet on Friday in the German capital with Chancellor Olaf Scholz, at a time when Ukrainian forces are facing increasing Russian military pressure in the east of the country.
This meeting comes in the wake of the postponement of a conference on the defense of Ukraine that was scheduled to be held on Saturday at a U.S. base in Germany, after President Joe Biden postponed his visit due to Hurricane Milton.
Zelensky was expected to present during this conference "clear and concrete measures to reach a just end to the war" ongoing between Russia and Ukraine since February 2022. A German government source indicated that the Ramstein summit was supposed to be "an opportunity to send a strong signal in favor of military support for Ukraine."
Zelensky, who is taking advantage of his travels to request more aid in the face of Russia, recently expressed regret for what he described as the West's "delay" in delivering weapons to his country. The Ukrainian President is also scheduled to visit Rome on Friday, where he will be received by the Pope at the Vatican, before heading to Berlin.
These diplomatic moves come amid escalating Russian military pressure on Ukraine, highlighting the urgent need to strengthen Western support and coordinate international efforts to find a peaceful solution to the conflict. The question remains about the extent to which these efforts can achieve tangible progress towards ending the war within the timeframe set by Zelensky.
