Donald Trump's Remarkable Return to the White House
On Wednesday, Donald Trump succeeded in his gamble for a return to the White House with an uncontested victory that sent shockwaves across the United States and resonated worldwide.
Trump’s return as a Republican is also exceptionally notable, given that his third campaign was marred by two assassination attempts, four indictments, and a felony conviction.
His victory was swift and decisive, as the former president clinched wins in the contested states of North Carolina and Georgia within hours, before ultimately receiving the final push from Pennsylvania and Wisconsin.
Even before the official announcement of his victory, Trump was inundated with congratulations from foreign leaders and officials. After leaving the White House in chaos, he managed, as he did in 2016, to convince Americans that he understands their daily struggles better than anyone else. This was particularly significant as Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris, who ran a hasty campaign after Joe Biden withdrew from the race, failed to garner sufficient support for her centrist message of unity in the face of her opponent's sharp criticisms regarding inflation and immigration.
Trump's return to the White House plunges millions of Americans wearing red hats into a state of jubilation, while simultaneously instilling fear in many others due to his increasingly harsh rhetoric, especially concerning immigrants. Upon taking the oath on January 20, the Republican will need to heal the wounds in this deeply divided country.
In his victory speech, Donald Trump called for "unity" and urged Americans to put "the divisions of the past four years behind us." However, throughout his campaign, he resorted to insults against his opponent, accused immigrants of "poisoning the country’s blood," and mocked his rivals. The newly elected president can count on a Senate regained by Republicans from Democratic hands, and his victory will be complete if his party retains control of the House of Representatives.
