Details of the Meeting Between the Turkish Foreign Minister and His American Counterpart

American newspapers covered the meeting between Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan and his American counterpart Marco Rubio, where discussions were held on bilateral and regional issues occupying the political arena. Among the main topics discussed were Syria, Gaza, defense relations, and the potential withdrawal of American troops from Syria. The focus was also on Turkey's role in countering Iran, its interests regarding the Kurds, as well as discussions about F-16 aircraft deals.
Despite the importance of the discussions, the absence of a joint press conference raised questions about the nature of the talks, indicating unresolved disagreements or an attempt to avoid public escalation, particularly given the sensitivity of the Turkish internal situation. Reports suggest that the stances on Syria and the division of influence between Turkey and Israel, in addition to American relations with the Kurds, reflect complex challenges in recalibrating these relationships.
Statements from American Newspapers:
- Washington Post:Diplomatic sources indicated that the meeting experienced "sharp variations" regarding the future of Syria, as Turkey seeks to bolster its control in northern areas to confront the Kurds, while the United States holds a differing perspective regarding their role.
- New York Times: Citing anonymous American officials, it noted that discussions focused on "reshaping the new Syria," with differences over policies concerning the Kurds, where the United States demands assurances from Turkey to curb Kurdish influence in exchange for defensive concessions.
- CNN:Highlighted that tensions regarding the Kurds may be a primary reason for the absence of any press statement, reflecting the difficulties faced by both sides in reaching a public consensus.
So far, no full official details have been published due to the lack of a joint press statement, but sources confirmed that the Kurds were a main focus in the discussions, especially concerning Turkey's stance towards the U.S.-backed People's Protection Units (YPG) as part of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).
