Chinese Foreign Minister arrives in India for surprise meetng with his Indian counterpart
The US Time Today reported, citing Reuters, India’s foreign ministry said, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi will meet his Indian counterpart in New Delhi on Friday, after arriving unannounced in the city for the first time since deadly border clashes in 2020 destroyed relationships.
A ministry spokesman told Reuters without giving further details, Wang will meet with Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar before noon. Wang will fly to Nepal later in the day.
Neither side had announced the visit before Wang landed in New Delhi late Thursday. Footage provided by Reuters partner ANI showed him exiting the commercial airport rather than the defense facility near where most foreign dignitaries land.
Wang was reprimanded by the Indian government ahead of his trip for comments made in Pakistan this week on disputed Kashmir. India and Pakistan partially rule Muslim-majority Kashmir but claim it entirely, and China has generally stood by its close ally Pakistan.
China-India relations deteriorated after at least 20 Indian and four Chinese soldiers were killed in a border dispute in the Ladakh region of India’s former Jammu and Kashmir state in June 2020.

Both sides are expected to discuss border tensions and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Both regard Russia as a friendly nation and have dismissed Western calls to condemn Moscow’s aggression, which they describe as a special military operation.
