The Chinese foreign ministry said on Friday (August 5), China has decided to sanction U.S. House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi and her immediate family in response to her "vicious" and "provocative" actions, the Swiss info reported, citing Reuters.

A ministry spokesperson said in a statement: "Despite China's serious concerns and firm opposition, Pelosi insisted on visiting Taiwan, seriously interfering in China's internal affairs, undermining China's sovereignty and territorial integrity, trampling on the one-China policy, and threatening the peace and stability of the Taiwan Strait.”

In her visit to Taiwan, Pelsoi has met President Tsai Ing-wen, assuring that her delegation had come to make it "unequivocally clear" that the US would not "abandon" the island.

"Forty three years ago, America made a promise to always stand with Taiwan... today our delegation came to Taiwan to make it unequivocally clear we will not abandon our commitment to Taiwan," Ms Pelosi said during the visit, referring to the Taiwan Relations Act.

China had earlier said the US would "pay the price" for Ms Pelosi's visit.
