Israel's announcement of the possible death of Yahya Sinwar, Hamas leader in Gaza, has sparked widespread reactions in American political circles. President Joe Biden described the event as "a good day for Israel, America, and the world," considering it an opportunity "for a future for Gaza without Hamas in power".
Biden affirmed that "Hamas is no longer capable of carrying out another attack like the one on October 7th," indicating his intention to speak soon with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu "to discuss the return of hostages and ending the war." The U.S. President considered Sinwar's death as an "opportunity" to achieve a settlement between Palestinians and Israelis.
Vice President Kamala Harris viewed that "this moment gives us an opportunity to finally end the Gaza war," adding that "it's time for a new beginning in Gaza without Hamas in power." She emphasized Israel's right to defend itself while calling for "the release of hostages and an end to suffering."
U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin confirmed that he spoke with his Israeli counterpart about Sinwar's death, reiterating "Washington's support for Israel's right to self-defense." American sources reported that Israel notified U.S. military officials of the possibility of Sinwar's death and sent photos of what might be his body.
In the same context, U.S. House Speaker Mike Johnson welcomed Sinwar's death, describing it as "a source of hope for all those seeking to live in freedom, and a source of comfort for the Israelis he sought to oppress."
The Israeli army had announced that it was verifying the possibility of "eliminating" Sinwar during an operation in the Gaza Strip, indicating that DNA tests were being conducted to confirm the identity of the body. Sinwar (61 years old) is considered a primary target for Israel, which accuses him of being the architect of the October 7, 2023 attack.
