Biden announces… withdrawal from the US elections

US President Joe Biden, who was among the top Democrat party candidates for the upcoming election, has dropped out of the presidential race.

In a statement published on social media, Biden said it was in the “best interest” of his party and country for him to quit his re-election bid.

The announcement follows a string of public and private pressure from lawmakers and party officials from both sides of the aisle to quit the race after his shockingly poor performance in a televised debate last month against Republican rival Donald Trump.

after Biden announced that he would not run for a second term as president, in a subsequent social media post, he endorsed US Vice President Kamala Harris as a replacement for him.

It was unclear whether other senior Democrats would challenge Harris for the party’s nomination, who was widely seen as the pick for many party officials, or whether the party itself would choose to open the field for nominations.

The Democrats are set to hold their convention in Chicago on August 19 to 22.

Taking the place at the top of the ticket, Harris would be the first Black woman in the country’s history to take the spot.
