20 Unidentified Bodies Discovered in Sayida Zainab Damascus
Ammar al-Salmo, a member of the board of directors of the Syrian Civil Defense, announced that the "White Helmets" found approximately 20 unidentified bodies and remains inside a storage area for medicines in the Sayida Zainab area of Damascus.
The Sayida Zainab region, which has been a stronghold for Hezbollah militants and Iran-backed militias since 2012, is now devoid of these groups, having been replaced by local armed men.
Al-Salmo stated in a statement to Agence France-Presse that he received a report about the presence of bodies and foul odors at the site, which is located near the Sayida Zainab shrine. He said, "The number of bodies here does not exceed 20 victims, but the bones are scattered everywhere. We will work to gather them to accurately assess the count."
A photographer from the agency noted the presence of a storage area near the shrine that contains a room with a small refrigerator where about ten bodies were found, along with skulls and disintegrated bones.
Civil defense teams collected the bodies and bones and packed them into bags in an attempt to identify them. Al-Salmo clarified that the place, designated as a medicine storage area, contains decomposed bodies that appear to have died approximately two years ago.
Numbers on the bags indicated they were linked to the city of Aleppo – Haritan, while the civil defense is working to document these bodies and analyze DNA to determine their identities.
