"Kurdish Journalists Network" calls for their protection from electronic threats in northern Syria

The Syrian Kurdish Journalists Network has issued a strongly worded statement condemning a systematic incitement campaign against journalists and activists in the "Rojava" region and northeastern Syria.
According to the statement issued on September 26, 2024, this campaign relies on spreading fake news and making false accusations through social media platforms, specifically Facebook.
The network pointed out that "dozens of fake accounts systematically circulated posts falsely accusing fellow journalists of being agents for Turkey and working against the Autonomous Administration." It warned that these allegations are not only misleading but also pose a serious threat to the lives and safety of those targeted.
The network called on the Media Department of the Autonomous Administration to follow up on this issue and expose those responsible for these misleading media attacks, emphasizing that the repercussions of this campaign go beyond infringing on press freedom to threaten the essence of public freedoms and the safety of targeted journalists.
The network also appealed to local and international media institutions and human rights organizations to intervene and confront these attacks, considering them a clear and blatant violation of human rights and press freedom in the region.
This statement comes in the context of increasing challenges facing journalists in conflict areas, where they are exposed to multiple risks including both physical and electronic threats. The northeastern Syria region is considered one of the sensitive areas in terms of media due to the complexities of the political and security situation there.
The continuation of such incitement campaigns raises serious concerns about the future of journalistic work in the region and highlights the urgent need to develop effective strategies to protect journalists and ensure freedom of expression in light of increasing digital challenges.
